TWH: Warriorship and State Monopoly of Violence

gavin and micah

My July essay for The Wild Hunt was written as a devotee of war gods with the purpose of examining various theories about the State’s monopoly of violence, counter-insurgency and warriorship. It was written in the aftermath of the killing five police officers during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Dallas July 7 and the killing of three police officers in Baton Rouge July 17, the same city where Alton Sterling was killed July 5.

    Just catching up on this…

‘the question is not whether violence is justified or not, but whether or not it is sanctioned by the State.’ – this is a very good point

Love the sheep n dogs / wolves analogy.

The justification of violence (at all) is something which has been on my mind for the past few months, as someone who venerates a gatherer of the dead who in at least one instance appears as a warrior. Interesting you speak of Odin taking ‘half of the slain from both sides’…

What’s your personal stance on violence? Can it ever be justified? How does your personal opinion relate to the stance of your war gods?
